    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Lieutenant George H. Rood, United States Navy, for heroic conduct during World War II as Boat Officer during rescue operations. Lieutenant Rood boarded a tank barge and directed the rescue of survivors struggling in the heavy surf. He made repeated trips and picked up 30 or 40 survivors, some so exhausted they had to be pulled over the lowered ramp of the barge.
