The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander John D. Shaw, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity during a combat mission over North Vietnam on 7 November 1965. Commander Shaw led a flight of five aircraft in a highly successful strike against a surface-to-air missile site. Despite intense enemy fire, Commander Shaw visually located the missile site, led the other members of the strike group to it, then dived to fire his rockets into the central control area, causing a fire which further marked the target for the other aircraft.
