The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Marvin R. Fields, United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while attached to Light Photographic Squadron SIXTY-THREE, Detachment ALFA, embarked in U.S.S. MIDWAY (CVA-41), on 1 June 1965. As flight leader, Lieutenant Fields piloted his RF-8A photo reconnaissance aircraft on a re-strike against a railroad marshalling yard, located north of the city of Vinh in North Vietnam, which was known to be defended by a heavy concentration of anti-aircraft guns. At the completion of the attack, he made a high speed, low altitude photo run over the city to the target area. During his approach to the target, he encountered heavy anti-aircraft fire from the ground which severely damaged his aircraft. While trying to return to his ship, Lieutenant Fields was forced to eject from his aircraft over the water when all the control systems were lost.
