The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross (Posthumously) to Lieutenant Frank Ray Compton (NSN: 0-661448), United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot of an A-4C Skyhawk in Attack Squadron NINETY-FOUR (VA-94), embarked in U.S.S. ENTERPRISE (CVAN-65), during operations against enemy aggressor forces in Vietnam, on 18 February 1966. Lieutenant Compton planned and led a three-plane strike mission against a strategically located bridge in enemy-held territory. He personally destroyed the 80-foot camouflaged span in the face of heavy opposition. His expert airmanship, courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
