The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Hospital Corpsman Third Class Patrick E. Boole, United States Navy, for heroism while serving aboard U.S.S. SHANGRI-LA (CVA-38) on the afternoon of 3 September 1965. Upon being called to the scene of an accident where a shipmate had fallen unconscious in a void which contained insufficient oxygen for survival, Hospital Corpsman Third Class Boole descended into the void without the aid of safety equipment and succeeded in rescuing the victim. Through his prompt and courageous actions in the face of great personal risk, Hospital Corpsman Third Class Boole undoubtedly saved a shipmate from certain death.
