(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Air Corps) James Bernhardt Cobb (ASN: 0-25515), United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Pilot of a P-38 Fighter Airplane of the 429th Fighter Squadron, 474th Fighter Group, NINTH Air Force, in action on an air mission on 23 August 1944. Captain Cobb distinguished himself by the valorous leadership of his squadron in dangerous low-level attacks that destroyed a pontoon bridge on the Seine River. The successful attacks led to the destruction of a large force of the German Army that was trapped and unable to retreat across the bridge. Captain Cobb conducted his attack in the face of withering ground fire and returned his airplane to base despite the fact that most of his rudder controls were shot away. The personal courage and zealous devotion to duty displayed by Captain Cobb on this occasion have upheld the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
