The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross (Posthumously) to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Edward Brendan Shaw, United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Pilot serving with Attack Squadron ONE HUNDRED SIXTY-FIVE (VA-165), while conducting a rescue mission in North Vietnam on 17 May 1965. After locating a downed Air Force pilot deep in enemy territory, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Shaw proceeded to a rendezvous with rescue helicopters and provided protective cover while guiding them to the scene.
