(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Staff Sergeant Cyrus Whitaker Cobb (ASN: 0-885759), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 601st Tank Destroyer Battalion, attached to the 1st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Tunisia, in December 1942. Strong enemy resistance had stopped the advance of a French infantry which his battalion supported. Staff Sergeant Cobb manned a machine gun in full view of the enemy and fired tracers to designate targets. He climbed upon the hood of his half-track, under heavy enemy fire, and force out a high explosive 75-mm. shell which had stuck in the chamber of his gun. By his good judgment in the selection of targets, numerous enemy emplacements were destroyed. Staff Sergeant Cobb’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
