    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Legion of Merit to Captain (MSC) Walter F. Mazzone, United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States from 1 February to 31 October 1965 as the Senior Physiologist during Project SEALAB II. Responsible for the physiological investigations and the decompression of the aquanauts after their return to the surface, Captain Mazzone personally subjected himself to all experimental conditions and insured that all aquanauts could be safely decompressed. His exceptional knowledge of physiology and the requirements for saturation diving practices was superbly demonstrated.

    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Lieutenant [then Lieutenant, Junior Grade] Walter F. Mazzone, United States Navy, was awarded the Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action as Depth Control Officer of the U.S.S. CREVALLE (SS-291), during the THIRD War Patrol of that Submarine in enemy-controlled waters of the Pacific from 26 June 1944 to 28 May 1944. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.

Mazzone, United States Navy, was awarded the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Medical Technical Officer for Project SEALAB 1 from 1 September 1963 to 4 August 1964. Captain Mazzone contributed materially in designing and operating breathing equipment used by the SEALAB inhabitants and the supervision of physiological tests of great value in the field.
