Headquarters, FIFTH U.S. Army, General Orders No. 49 (March 25, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Carl Raymond Clegg (ASN: 33033307), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment (Separate), FIFTH U.S. Army, in action against enemy forces on 11 November 1943, near Venafro, Italy. During an attack against a heavily-fortified enemy position on Mount Croce, Corporal Clegg, although not a member of the attacking echelon, volunteered to go with an officer and another enlisted man to precede his company and clear booby traps and land mines from the route of advance. He advanced forward with his comrades and successfully accomplished his dangerous mission despite intense enemy machine gun and artillery fire. His action enabled his company to continue the attack. Under continual fire, they then advanced to the top of Mount Croce, where they observed an enemy machine gun holding up the advance of the main body. Through heavy artillery, machine gun and sniper fire, he and his two companions assaulted the position, killed the crew and destroyed the gun. The three men then attacked a second machine gun firing from a nearby position, and although the officer was wounded. Corporal Clegg and the other enlisted man killed or captured the crew and protecting riflemen. Corporal Clegg then forced the prisoners down the mountain by himself. Corporal Clegg’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
