The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Signalman First Class Harry D. Edwards, United States Navy, for heroism in rescuing an 18-month-old child from almost certain death on 12 December 1964 in the Hokulani section of Navy housing at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Observing the girl standing directly in the path of an automobile which was apparently out of control, Signalman First Class Edwards dashed in front of the onrushing vehicle, seized the child and leaped with her to safety as the car roared directly across the spot where the girl had been standing. By his prompt and courageous action, Signalman First Class Edwards risked his life to save that of another.
