The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Chief Gunner’s Mate Roy A. Campbell, United States Navy, for heroism while serving as a Naval Advisor in the Republic of Vietnam on 12 April 1964. When fire started in a magazine which contained 2,000 pounds of high explosives, Chief Campbell, although injured and fully aware of the personal dangers involved, unhesitatingly entered the magazine and fought the fire until it was exhausted, thereby preventing serious injury or death to 20 Vietnamese soldiers billeted in a nearby barracks, and preventing further injuries to a seriously injured naval officer in the immediate vicinity.
