The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Aviation Machinist’s Mate Second Class Emery Sharp Anderson, United States Navy, for heroism in the line of his profession as a member of the ground crew during an attempt to extinguish a fire in an airplane which caught fire while warming up prior to take-off. Knowing that this plane was loaded with a 1,000-pound live bomb, he attempted to extinguish the fire with a CO2 fire extinguisher and continued his efforts despite the fact that his arm was pierced by a .30 caliber bullet which had exploded from the heat of the fire. It was necessary to pull him away from the burning plane though still attempting to extinguish the flames with an almost completely exhausted CO2 fire extinguisher. By his actions he indicated a complete disregard for his own personal safety in the execution of his duty and distinguished himself by his coolness and courage. His action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
