Headquarters, Southwest Pacific Area, General Orders No. 29 (March 30, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Claude Ellis Clark (ASN: 0-366033), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 128th Infantry Regiment, 32d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Buna, New Guinea, during the period 19 to 21 November 1942. While commanding an infantry company during attacks on enemy positions, First Lieutenant Clark skillfully organized and directed the movements of his company and by his personal example inspired his men to great effort. He repeatedly moved in advance of his troops, in complete disregard of his own safety while under heavy enemy fire. His courageous leadership was responsible, in large part, for the successful attainment of an important objective. First Lieutenant Clark’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 32d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
