The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Gunner’s Mate Third Class Conrad E. Anderson (NSN: 8462687), United States Navy, for heroism on 29 October 1944 while serving on U.S.S. LST-278 during the operation against Peleliu Island. Gunner’s Mate Third Class Anderson, serving on an LST had been broached by the heavy surf, noticed a landing craft off the seaward bow capsize and the embarked troops thrown into the sea. Seeing three of the men who were unable to swim being swept seaward by a strong current, he dove overboard despite the obvious dangers from the surf and succeeded in sustaining two of them until a rescue line was passed and they were brought aboard. His heroic action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
