The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Chief Motor Machinist’s Mate Carlton F. Anderson, United States Coast Guard, for heroism as a member of the crew of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter 83468 off the coast of France on 30 June 1944. On this date the mining of a Landing Craft Tank was observed approximately one thousand yards distant. After three casualties had been taken from the stricken ship, the commanding officer of the landing craft reported fire aboard and requested volunteers from the cutter to help extinguish the fire. Chief Anderson, after having volunteered, was selected and put aboard the ship in answer to the request. His efficiency and meritorious effort contributed substantially to the extinguishing of the fire and the bringing of the landing craft to the beach. The courage and outstanding devotion to duty displayed on this occasion were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
