The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Joseph V. Amendolara (NSN: 161162), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action as a Naval Gunfire Liaison Officer during the amphibious assault on the Island of Sicily. Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Amendolara was in command of a shore fire control party of the 45th Division, U.S. Army, in the attack on the Island of Sicily from 10 July to 13 July 1943. He landed in the first wave, and, after organizing his party after his landing boat had swamped, maintained position in the front lines, and, while under enemy fire, skillfully directed gunfire from supporting destroyers and cruisers at enemy batteries, thereby assisting his battalion to advance and gain their objectives. The judgment, initiative, and exceptional courage displayed by Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Amendolara reflected great credit upon him and the United States Naval Service.
