The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Aviation Radioman First Class Francis L. Ambrose (NSN: 4380781), United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight during the Second Battle of the Philippine Sea, 24 October 1944. As Radioman of a carrier-based dive bomber, he participated in an attack which severely crippled an enemy battleship Task Force. His gunfire in the face of intense anti-aircraft fire aided his pilot in scoring a direct hit on an enemy battleship. His photographs taken despite the deadly anti-aircraft fire were invaluable in damage assessment. His calmness, skill and courage were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
