The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Lieutenant Raymond H. Ambron, United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as an LST Group Commander and Commander of a Beach Assault Unit prior to and during the amphibious invasion of Southern France in August 1944. Lieutenant Ambron exhibited outstanding ability and leadership in organizing, training and maintaining the material readiness of his units and, in spite of continual service over a long period of time and loss of many experienced personnel, brought them to full readiness for assault operations. With courage and determination, he led his assault unit of landing craft through dangerous waters and expeditiously discharged assault troops, their equipment and supplies on the correct beach against enemy resistance and at the scheduled time. His subsequent control of the movement of ships and craft during unloading activities over the beaches was exercised with such skill and was so effectively coordinated with all participating agencies that a continuing and adequate flow of supplies was made to support the phenomenal advance of the Allied Armies in Southern France. The exceptional ability, excellent judgment, and outstanding devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Ambron reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
