The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Charles Herbert Ambellan (NSN: 0-176687), United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight against enemy forces in the Pacific on 19 June 1944. When his division encountered strong enemy formations en route to attack his task force he displayed remarkable courage and skill in shooting down three of the enemy. With fearless disregard for his personal safety, he pressed his attacks through their concentrated fire to disrupt their formations. His resourcefulness and aggressiveness never fluctuated throughout the engagement, and his resolution and bravery were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Ambellan completed twenty flights in a combat area where enemy anti-aircraft fire was expected to be effective or where enemy aircraft patrols usually occurred. His conduct throughout has distinguished him among those performing duties of the same character.
