The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant William Joseph Greeves (NSN: 0-634795), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in armed conflict against an enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. Lieutenant Greeves, as a member of the J-4 Division, U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, Republic of Vietnam, did, on 16 February 1964 in Saigon, upon becoming aware of a bomb being placed in the Capitol Kinh-Do Theater lobby, courageously and unhesitatingly, without respect to his own personal safety, enter the main area of the theater and warn the unsuspecting servicemen and dependent women and children to take cover. In the ensuing seconds of time this warning enabled those persons to obtain protection from the bomb thus reducing the number of casualties sustained. Lieutenant Greeves was slightly wounded by the explosion. By his daring action and heroic devotion to duty in the face of extreme danger, Lieutenant Greeves upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
