The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Fireman Apprentice Jay C. Greenwood, United States Navy, for heroic conduct on the night of 11 July 1962 while serving with the U.S. Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Illinois. Hearing cries for help emanating from the vicinity of the outer south breakwater area, Fireman Apprentice Greenwood, although unable to sight the person in distress because of darkness, dived into the water and swam through one to two-foot waves in the general direction of the cries until he succeeded in locating and towing to safety a young woman who was fully clothed and struggling to stay afloat. Through his prompt actions in an emergency, Fireman Apprentice Greenwood was directly responsible for saving a life.
