The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Second Gold Star in lieu of a Third Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Robert Edward Murray (NSN: 0-315070), United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot of a Fighter Plane during action against enemy Japanese forces in the vicinity of the Ryukyu Islands on 3 April 1945. While flying as wingman in a ten-plane fighter sweep, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Murray aided his group in repelling an attack despite numerically superior hostile fighters and contributed materially to the shooting down in flames of two enemy planes. His skill and devotion to duty in the face of enemy opposition were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
