When two automatic riflemen near him were killed in the fierce fighting, Private First Class Chimenti caught the falling weapon, killing an enemy machine gunner and saving one of his own machine gun squads which was vulnerable to the enemy fire. He rushed in to assault he Japanese position but exhausted his supply of ammunition before accomplishing his mission and was forced to withdraw. In a later attack on the same day, Private Chimenti ran to within 10 yards of hostile positions to rescue a wounded officer who, although exposed to intense enemy fire, had ordered him to stay under cover. Private First Class Chimenti’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
