(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class Charles Hanger Chenoweth, Sr. (ASN: 35848673), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 112th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Germany, on 8 November 1944. When Private First Class Chenoweth’s platoon was isolated in a house by fire from a German machine gun, he dashed out of the house and engaged the hostile gun crew with automatic rifle fire. Firing from the hip, he stormed the German weapon killing its crew and wounding several others. As his platoon maneuvered under the cover of his fire, he was struck and killed by fire from an enemy sniper. By his superb courage and unhesitating action, Private First Class Chenoweth enabled his platoon to move to a new position from which the German attack was repelled. Private First Class Chenoweth’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 28th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
