The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Hospitalman Corpsman Second Class Donald C. Raymond, Jr., United States Navy, for heroic conduct during the period 20 to 22 September 1960 while serving with Underwater Demolition Team ELEVEN. When a U.S. Marine was transferred from U.S.S. COOK (APD-130) to U.S.S. REDFISH (AG(SS)-395), suffering from decompression sickness and in a critical condition, Hospitalman Corpsman Second Class Raymond voluntarily entered the escape trunk of REDFISH in order to recompress the patient, despite the extreme danger of a loss of pressure which could have been fatal for both men. Hospitalman Corpsman Second Class Raymond remained pressurized throughout the entire treatment which lasted 36 hours and 13 minutes. By his outstanding skill and determined efforts, he was directly instrumental in saving a life.
