The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Distinguished Service Medal to Admiral Herbert Gladstone Hopwood, United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States as Commander in Chief, U.S. Pacific Fleet, from February 1958 to August 1960. Admiral Hopwood has provided this nation distinguished service in one of the most responsible military positions in the Department of the navy. Pacific Fleet forces, under Admiral Hopwood’s cardinal leadership, have been a potent tool in furthering United States national policy objectives in the Pacific-Asiatic Aerea. His astute judgment and outstanding ability in professional planning and organization have had a powerful impact on, and added significantly to, our national defense posture. He materially strengthened Pacific Fleet striking forces with establishment of the U.S. Naval Defense Forces, Western Pacific, Barrier Forces, Pacific, and Antisubmarine Defense Force, Pacific. His exceptional professional ability, inspiring devotion to the fulfillment of extremely important and exacting tasks, and distinguished service reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
