Herold, United States Navy, for meritorious achievement while serving as Communications Officer and Radar Evaluator on the Staff of commander Battleship Division THREE, during a night surface engagement with an enemy Japanese Battleship Task Force in Surigao Strait, Philippine Islands, 25 October 1944, and on the Staff of Commander Fire Support Unit in the amphibious operations preceding the surface engagement, 25 October 1944. Rendering invaluable aid in both planning and execution phases of these operations, Commander Herold contributed materially to the success of our forces. Responsible for the research, design, development, test, and procurement for service use of shipboard fire control and missile guidance systems, Captain Herold carried out his responsibilities with a high degree of leadership and professional skill, contributing greatly toward equipping the United States with a Fleet Ballistic Missile Weapons System.

Demonstrating resourcefulness and ability, Commander Herold rendered invaluable assistance to his commander and contributed materially to the success of his division throughout four major operations against the enemy. His skill and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. [Commander Herold is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.]
