The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Commander Bernard Amman (NSN: 0-104888), United States Navy, for heroic conduct in rescuing four enlisted men from a burning automobile on Hammersmith Road, Newport, Rhode Island, at 1945 hours, 29 July 1960. Commander Amman, while engaged in an evening drive with his family, arrived at the scene of an auto accident on Hammersmith Road. At the time of Commander Amman’s arrival, the entire front end of the auto was on fire, with two of the occupants unconscious – one unconscious on the ground and the other unable to exit the auto. Without hesitation, Commander Amman dispatched his wife to seek assistance while he, with no thought of his own personal safety, entered the burning auto to extricate the occupants. Commander Amman’s complete disregard for his own personal safety, in view of the fire and possible explosion of the gasoline tank, led to the successful extrication of the three enlisted men from the car. These three men and the enlisted man on the ground were then removed by Commander Amman from the immediate vicinity to a nearby ditch for safety from any explosion.
