The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Commander George P. Steele, II, United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States from 1 August to 14 September 1960 as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. SEADRAGON (SS(N)-584). Under Commander Steele’s excellent leadership, SEADRAGON successfully negotiated the hazardous Northwest Passage from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean via the Arctic Basin. During this cruise, the first accurate measurements of the underwater area of icebergs were accomplished and all other operational and scientific objectives achieved, resulting in the accumulation of information and technical data of great value to the United States.
