The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Constructionman Bert K. Schiavone, United States Navy, for heroic conduct on 22 September 1959 while serving on board United States Naval Mobile Construction Battalion THREE. When a helicopter crashed and exploded into flames on the airstrip a the Marine Corps Air Facility, Futenma, Okinawa, pinning two Marine pilots in the flaming wreckage, Petty Officer Schiavone immediately rushed to the scene and, with the aid of three fellow servicemen, succeeded in extricating the removing the two injured victims to safety despite intermittent explosions and the intense heat and flames. Through his prompt and courageous efforts in the face of grave personal danger, Petty Officer Schiavone was directly instrumental in saving the lives of the two pilots. His heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
