The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross (Posthumously) to Lieutenant James Millard Alston (NSN: 0-112962), United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while serving with Observation Composite Squadron ONE (VOC-1), while participating in twenty aerial flights against enemy forces within the period 16 February to 10 March 1945, during the invasion of Iwo Jima, Empire of Japan. His courage and skill were at all times inspiring and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
