The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Aviation Radioman Second Class Earl T. Alpha (NSN: 6646298), United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight in the Pacific Area from 27 March 1945 to 9 August 1945. Aviation Radioman Second Class Alpha completed twenty flights in a combat area where enemy anti-aircraft fire was expected to be effective or where enemy aircraft patrols usually occurred. His conduct throughout has distinguished him among those performing duties of the same character.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Aviation Radioman Second Class Earl T. Alpha (NSN: 6646298), United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Second Radioman of a Navy Patrol Bomber assigned to attack Marcus Island at low level in daylight on 9 May 1945. Aviation Radioman Second Class Alpha skillfully and courageously performed his duties during the attack in the face of intense and accurate anti-aircraft fire from gun emplacements and rifle fire from troops, which repeatedly hit his plane. In addition he assisted in the destruction of two enemy aircraft, strafing and bombing installations, causing widespread damage, and inflicted severe casualties on enemy troops. His skill and courage were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
