The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Ensign Warren J. Alm, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Pilot of a carrier-based Torpedo Bomber in Torpedo Squadron THIRTY-FOUR (VT-34), in an attack on a Japanese heavy cruiser in the vicinity of the Kure Naval Base, Japan, on 28 July 1945. In the face of intense and accurate anti-aircraft fire from the cruiser and nearby shore batteries, he skillfully and courageously made a glide bombing attack, releasing his bombs at low altitude scoring hits or near misses which caused severe and vital damage to the vessel. His courage and disregard for his personal safety were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
