The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Chief Boatswain’s Mate (AA) (CB) Alfred F. Allison (NSN: 6189599), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States while serving with the 579th U.S. Naval Construction Battalion and Maintenance Unit during the advance landings in the Anzio-Nettuno area, Italy, in January 1944. As Senior Platoon Petty Officer his pontoon causeway group, Chief Allison assisted with great skill and energy in the operation of the causeways to unload assault ships and craft over the beaches in support of the advancing ground units. When his causeways were bombed and strafed by enemy aircraft, causing complete disruption of unloading activities, he calmly and efficiently reorganized his unit and quickly resumed these vital operations. Subsequently, he displayed extreme ability and initiative in coordinating the work of salvaging the many damaged and broached causeway units and small craft which had been rendered inoperative by enemy action and extremely adverse weather conditions. The resourcefulness, exemplary conduct, and outstanding devotion to duty displayed by Chief Allison reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
