(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Delmar Burruss Chamblee (ASN: 34161940), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 179th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Grandvillers, France, on 6 October 1944. Private First Class Chamblee manned a machine gun in the face of a heavy enemy counterattack. His accurate fire killed 23 of the enemy and wounded many more. The enemy, in an attempt to eliminate the gun, fired on his position, and a fragment from a grenade hit him in the eye, almost blinding him. Private First Class Chamblee stayed at the gun, however, until the attack had been repulsed. Private First Class Chamblee’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
