The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander George Washington Allen (NSN: 0-22174), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in operations against the enemy during the invasion of the coast of France in June 1944. As Commanding Officer of the Mine Sweeping Squadron of Task Force ONE TWO TWO, he was assigned an extremely important mission in the initial assault on the sixth of June. The mine sweeping operation began before “H” Hour and required sweeping a long channel close inshore and well within range of enemy shore batteries. Despite many near misses from intensive enemy gun fire Commander Allen skillfully directed his squadron so as to accomplish successfully the hazardous and arduous mission. The courage, leadership and devotion to duty displayed in this operation were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
