The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Ship’s Cook Third Class Ray Alfred, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a member of a Gun Crew on board the U.S.S. PETROF BAY (CVE-80), during action against enemy Japanese forces in the Battle off Samar, on 25 October 1944. When powerful elements of the Japanese Fleet steamed through the San Bernardine Strait and attacked his Task Group, he remained steadfast at his battle station throughout the furious action and by his superb skill and courage, contributed materially to the successful performance of the PETROF BAY against the numerically superior force. His dauntless performance, aggressive determination and loyal service in the face of tremendous odds reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
