The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class Robert H. Alexander (NSN: 6079704), United States Navy, for heroism while serving with a Marine Infantry Battalion in action against the enemy on Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 25 June 1944. During the night, Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class Alexander’s platoon was caught in a heavy concentration of enemy artillery fire which caused many casualties and kept the men pinned down. Despite being painfully wounded himself, and despite continuing heavy artillery fire he went fearlessly from one casualty to the other, treating their wounds. By these acts of heroism he saved many lives. His conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
