The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Boatswain Harry L. Alexander (NSN: 326689), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Boatswain on the Air Craft Carrier U.S.S. TICONDEROGA (CV-14), operating in the vicinity of Formosa Island on 21 January 1945. When the ship was hit during an enemy air attack he speedily organized and led fire fighting crews on the flight deck. When spreading fires endangered a five inch powder magazine, he volunteered and led a hose crew in flooding the magazine to avert a serious explosion. His leadership, prompt action, and utter disregard for his own safety were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
