The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Commander Donald William Alexander, United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Engineering Officer of an Aircraft Carrier during the period 11 September 1944 to 26 May 1945. Commander Alexander maintained the efficiency of the ship’s power plant in an outstanding manner during a long series of operations against the enemy. He directed and supervised the completion of unexpected and difficult repairs while the ship was engaging in combat and conducted extensive overhaul operations during the short period the ship was in fleet anchorage in the forward area. His qualities of leadership was an inspiration to all hands in his department and contributed greatly toward keeping his ship in combat condition long beyond the normal period expected of vessels in its class. His professional skill and the high standard of his performance of duty were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
