The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Ensign Junior Elra Aldridge (NSN: 0-355299), United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight in operations against the enemy on 1 April 1945, in the vicinity of Amami O Shima, Nansei Shoto. As Pilot of a carrier-based torpedo bomber he participated in a night torpedo attack against units of the Japanese fleet. After volunteering for the mission he skillfully and courageously piloted his aircraft against the enemy warships, probably scoring a damaging hit, in spite of darkness and intense and accurate anti-aircraft fire. By his action he contributed directly to the success of the mission which crippled and delayed the enemy forces, resulting in their destruction the following day. His courage and professional skill were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
