The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Merrill Verne Alders (NSN: 0-290455), United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot of a carrier-based airplane in an attack against shipping in Manila Bay on 25 November 1944. In spite of intense and accurate anti-aircraft fire, he scored a direct hit on a merchant ship inflicting serious damage. His skill and courage were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Merrill Verne Alders (NSN: 0-290455), United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while serving as Pilot of a carrier-based bombing squadron on 25 October 1944. Operating at extreme range from his carrier, he participated in an attack on major units of the enemy fleet in the vicinity of the Philippine Islands and despite enemy anti-aircraft fire, pressed home his attack with the highest vigor and determination. His conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
