The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Arthur Calvin Cato (ASN: 34760643), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 133d Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Ciorlano, Italy, on 1 November 1943. Private Cato’s Infantry squad was pinned down by crossfire from enemy positions to the front and on the right flank. On his own initiative he crawled forward in full view of the enemy through heavy machine gun, mortar, and sniper fire to attack the enemy positions. Noticing that his corporal was receiving fire from a machine gun nest, Private Cato stood up and fired his submachinegun into the Germans there, then reloaded and continued to fire, wounding several of the enemy. The Germans abandoned the position and fled in disorder. The squad was then able to advance to the top of the hill to provide support for the remainder of the platoon. While Private Cato was firing a third clip at the fleeing Germans he was wounded in the head by enemy machinegun fire. Private Cato’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
