The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Fireman Second Class Carrol Donald Albright, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action on 25 May 1945, as a member of the crew of a radar picket ship during the assault and capture of Okinawa Gunto. After the ship had been struck and severely damaged by two enemy suicide planes and the wounded had to be lowered over the side into the water, he, upon observing an unconscious man drift into some burning oil, bravely plunged into the treacherous seas, swam to the aid of the man and removed him from the flaming area to a place of safety. Through his gallant initiative and heroic achievement in the face of great danger, he contributed materially to the saving of the man’s life and proved to be an inspiration to all. His courage and conduct throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
