The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Burton Floyd J. Albrecht (NSN: 0-104605), United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot of a Liberator Patrol Bomber (PB4Y-1) engaged in tracking and reporting a large force of enemy destroyers east of Bougainville on 28 September 1943. Lieutenant, Junior Grade Albrecht distinguished himself by superb handling of his airplane in the face of a determined attack by 14 enemy fighters. Through judicious use of cloud cover, and alternating attack and evasive tactics, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Albrecht succeeded in destroying three enemy patrol planes without damage to his own planes and without casualties among his crew. Eight days later, with the same plane and crew, on a search mission northeast of the Solomons, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Albrecht outmaneuvered, outfought, and destroyed an enemy medium bomber (Mitsubishi Type 1) in a short, furious fight, without casualties among his crew and with only minor damage to his plane. His intrepidity and skill were an inspiration to his entire crew, and his courage, coolness, and proficiency were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
