The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Walter Harold Albert, United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Fighter Pilot in Fighting Squadron SIXTEEN (VF-16), embarked in U.S.S. LEXINGTON (CV-16), in action 13 June 1944 to 20 June 1944. Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Albert completed twenty flights in a combat area where enemy anti-aircraft fire was expected to be effective or where enemy aircraft patrols usually occurred. His conduct throughout has distinguished him among those performing duties of the same character.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Ensign Walter Harold Albert, United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Fighter Pilot in Fighting Squadron SIXTEEN (VF-16), embarked in U.S.S. LEXINGTON (CV-16), in action against enemy forces in the vicinity of the Mariana Islands, on 16 and 19 June 1944, as Pilot of a carrier-based fighter plane. While escorting two of our torpedo planes in a long range search for enemy naval forces, he encountered two enemy search planes and shot both of them down in flames, thus materially hampering the search activities of the enemy. During a fighter sweep over enemy airfields, he also destroyed by strafing four enemy fighters on the ground. His courage and skill were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
