Commander Fast Carrier Task Force Pacific: Serial 0188 (June 2, 1944)

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Charles C. Ainsworth, United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight during the air assaults on Truk Islands by fast carrier forces in April 1944. Lieutenant Ainsworth flew his observation seaplane into Truk lagoon and landed within gun range of enemy defensive installations to effect the rescue of a fighter pilot who had been shot down during the course of the raids. His cool and daring airmanship and complete disregard for personal safety saved this downed pilot from certain capture by the enemy. This rescue mission performed in enemy controlled waters and in spite of unfavorable sea conditions constituted an outstanding performance of duty in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
