The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Corporal George Williams (ASN: 6211799), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy displayed in rescuing two women from a burning automobile on the United States Highway 69, near Bethany, Missouri, 21 January 1938. Due to intense fog, two cars collided, resulting in jamming the doors and puncturing the gasoline tank of one car and causing the car to be immediately enveloped in flames, thus making it impossible for the occupants to escape. Corporal Williams, seeing the accident from a nearby house, without thought of danger to himself, rushed forward to the blazing car, and after several attempts, due to the intense heat and smoke, rescued the occupants, who were dazed by the collision, from their dangerous predicament, thereby undoubtedly saving their lives.
