The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private Stanley R. Weiss (ASN: 6549561), United States Army, for heroism, not involving actual conflict with an enemy, displayed while serving with Headquarters Troop, 11th Cavalry Regiment, in saving a man from drowning in the Merced River, Yosemite National Park, California, on 20 June 1936. While sitting on the bank, Private Welsh noticed that a man was in distress out in the river about 75 yards distant. With utter disregard for his own safety, he plunged into the swift current, succeeded in bringing the man to the surface and towing him to the beach where he immediately administered artificial respiration until the man was revived.
